What active overnight support means, when it’s funded, and how to find a home that staffs it every night.
Frequently asked questions
- Can I use AWDO funding for a family member to stay overnight?
- No. AWDO and other overnight support funding is for registered or unregistered disability support workers, not for family members or informal carers. The NDIS does not fund family members to provide overnight support through AWDO.
- How do I know if I am currently on AWDO or sleepover?
- Check your service agreements and your provider's invoices. The line items should clearly identify whether overnight support is being billed as a sleepover, an active overnight, or AWDO. If you are not sure, ask your provider directly.
- Does AWDO require a different type of registered provider?
- AWDO is typically delivered by providers registered in the Assistance with Daily Life registration group. There is no separate AWDO registration — what matters is that the provider is appropriately registered and experienced in delivering active overnight support.
- What if the NDIA only funds sleepover but I believe I need AWDO?
- Request a review. Gather updated clinical evidence that documents your specific overnight support needs and why a sleepover arrangement is not adequate. A support coordinator or disability advocate can assist you through the review process.
