Frequently asked questions

Can I buy AT from overseas suppliers?
The NDIS does not prohibit purchasing AT from overseas, but the item must still meet Australian safety standards and the supplier must be able to support repairs and maintenance in Australia. In practice, most AT purchases are from Australian suppliers for these reasons.
What if I need AT urgently?
The NDIS has an urgent or unplanned AT pathway that can move faster than the standard process. You will still need to demonstrate need, but the evidence requirements can be streamlined. Speak to your LAC or support coordinator as soon as possible if you have an urgent need.
Does AT funding affect my other plan budgets?
AT typically sits in Capital Supports, which is a separate budget from Core Supports and Capacity Building. Unspent Capital funds generally cannot be redirected to Core Supports, so it is important to plan your AT spending carefully.
Can I trial AT before committing to purchase?
Yes, and for complex items the NDIA strongly encourages trials. Your AT advisor can often arrange a trial through a supplier or an AT loan library. Trialling before purchase reduces the risk of ending up with equipment that does not meet your needs.
