Frequently asked questions

Will the assessment decide my funding on the spot?

No. The support needs assessment gathers information about your functional capacity and support needs. It is one input into planning, not a funding decision made in the room. The NDIA determines plans through its own process. No one can tell you your outcome in advance.

Do I have to do this now?

The support needs assessment using the I-CAN tool is expected to roll out from 1 April 2027, and the timeline is progressive. Dates have shifted before, so confirm current timing with the NDIA. You do not need to act today simply because a future date is listed.

Can I bring someone with me?

Yes. You can bring a support person — a family member, friend, advocate, or support coordinator. They can help you stay calm, remember details, and describe support you receive. Arrange any access needs, like an interpreter or extra time, in advance.

What if I get upset or need to stop?

You can ask to pause or take a break at any time. If you feel unsafe or in crisis, contact Lifeline on 13 11 14. In an emergency where someone is in immediate danger, call 000. Concerns about a provider or the Code of Conduct can go to the NDIS Commission on 1800 035 544.

What evidence should I bring?

Recent reports from your GP, specialists, and allied health professionals such as an occupational therapist, physiotherapist, psychologist, or speech pathologist. Any existing functional assessments, hospital summaries, and a list of equipment and supports you use are also useful.
