Frequently asked questions
Is capacity building the same as Core supports?
No. Core supports help with everyday life right now and are usually flexible, so you can often move funds between Core sub-categories. Capacity building funds skill-building and independence over time, and the money is locked to each specific sub-category — you can't move it around.
Can I move money between capacity building sub-categories?
No. Each sub-category, such as Improved Daily Living or Support Coordination, has its own budget that can only be spent on that purpose. If you're short in one area and have extra in another, you generally can't shift it. Raise the mismatch at your next plan reassessment with supporting evidence.
Is capacity building being cut in the NDIS reforms?
Capacity-building daily-activity allocations are being reduced by around 10%, and social and community participation funding is tightening from 1 October 2026 as plans renew. From 1 April 2027 a new framework begins that replaces the current categories with more flexible budgets. Dates have shifted before, so confirm what applies to you with the NDIA.
What happens to my capacity building funding if I don't use it?
Unused funds usually don't roll over into your next plan, and large unspent amounts may signal the support isn't needed at that level. Aim to use funding purposefully toward your goals, keep progress reports, and speak to your support coordinator if you're struggling to use a budget.
Do I need a support coordinator to use capacity building supports?
Not necessarily. Support coordination is one capacity building sub-category, and it's only included if it's in your plan. Many people manage their own capacity building supports or use a plan manager for the paperwork. If your situation is complex, coordination can help — but it's not required to access therapy or other supports.
