Frequently asked questions

Do I need to do anything right now because of flexible budgets?

No. The new framework rolls out progressively from 1 April 2027, and you only move to it when your plan is reassessed or renewed. The most useful thing you can do now is find out when your current plan ends and keep your reports and evidence up to date. Confirm timing with the NDIA.

Will flexible budgets mean my personal care or daily support is cut?

Critical daily-living and personal-care supports are not the target of these changes. The reductions apply to social, civic and community participation allocations, which are being reset from 1 October 2026 as plans renew. Whether you are affected depends on how much of your plan goes to those participation supports, so it is worth checking your own numbers with a coordinator or advocate.

What is the support-needs assessment and do I have to do it?

It is a structured assessment, using a tool called I-CAN version 6, where a trained assessor looks at how much support you need across everyday areas of life. Under the new framework it is how your flexible budget is worked out, replacing the old negotiation at a planning meeting. It becomes part of the process as your plan renews from 2027; the NDIA can confirm exactly when it applies to you.

Can I still choose how my plan is managed under flexible budgets?

Yes. Self-managed, plan-managed and NDIA-managed remain options and are separate from the category changes. One related change is that plan management moves to a commissioned panel from 1 October 2027, but your current arrangement continues until that panel is in place, so you do not need to switch early.

What can I do if my funding is reduced and I disagree?

You can ask the NDIA to explain the decision, request an internal review, and if needed apply to the Administrative Review Tribunal. Extra appeals-advocacy funding in 2026-27 means free help is more available. For your specific situation, talk to the NDIA, a support coordinator or an independent advocate rather than relying on general information.
