Frequently asked questions
Does plan management come out of my NDIS budget?
No. If you choose to be plan-managed, the NDIA adds a separate amount to your plan (in the Improved Life Choices budget) to pay the plan manager's fee. It does not reduce the funding you have for your actual supports, so it does not cost you services.
Can I use an unregistered provider?
It depends on your management type. If you are plan-managed or self-managed, yes — you can use both registered and unregistered providers. If you are NDIA-managed, you can only use providers registered with the NDIS Commission. Unregistered does not mean unsafe; it means the provider has not gone through the registration process.
Can I change from NDIA-managed to plan-managed or self-managed?
Usually yes. You can ask to change at your next planning meeting or plan reassessment, and sometimes mid-plan. Contact the NDIA on 1800 800 110 or your support coordinator to ask what is possible in your situation and how long it takes, as processes can change.
Is self-managing risky?
Self-management is a responsibility rather than a risk in itself. You pay providers, keep receipts for at least five years, and may take on employer duties if you hire workers directly. Many people manage well with a simple system. If you are unsure, talk to a support coordinator or the NDIA before deciding.
Will the reforms take away my plan management choice?
The reforms do not remove your ability to choose how your plan is managed. From a proposed date of 1 October 2027, plan managers may come from a commissioned panel rather than the open market, with existing arrangements continuing until then. These dates are proposed and may change, so confirm with the NDIA.
