Frequently asked questions
How often should I check my NDIS spending?
Once or twice a month is enough for most people. A quick look at each budget's remaining balance lets you catch overspending or an unexpected charge early. If you have a lot of supports or several providers, checking fortnightly gives you more control. The key is doing it regularly rather than only near the end of your plan.
Why does my remaining balance in the app look higher than it should?
Providers often deliver a support before they invoice for it, and there can be a lag of days or weeks before a claim appears. That means the app can show more money left than you actually have, because recent supports have not been claimed yet. Always mentally subtract supports you have received but not yet seen billed.
Can I move money between my budget areas if one runs low?
Usually not freely. Core supports tend to be flexible within the Core budget, but Capacity Building and Capital funding are often tied to specific purposes and cannot simply be topped up from elsewhere. If you are running short in a fixed budget, speak to your support coordinator or the NDIA about whether a plan reassessment is appropriate, rather than assuming you can shift funds.
What should I do if I think a provider has over-charged me?
Start by comparing the invoice against your service agreement and the support actually delivered, then raise it with the provider, as many charges are honest mistakes. If it is not resolved, or you suspect dishonest billing, contact the NDIA on 1800 800 110 or the NDIS Commission on 1800 035 544. Keep copies of the invoices and notes of your conversations.
Will the reforms change how I track my spending?
Over time, yes. A new planning framework rolling out from 1 April 2027 is expected to replace the current Core, Capital and Capacity Building budgets with more flexible budgets and longer plans, which will change what you see and track. Dates have already shifted once, so confirm the current position with the NDIA. Building a simple monthly tracking habit now will still serve you under the new system.
