Frequently asked questions
Do I have to be registered with the NDIS Commission to start?
As at December 2025, mandatory registration for STANDARD support coordination (registration group 0106) is PAUSED with no set date, so many coordinators operate unregistered while serving plan-managed and self-managed participants. SPECIALIST support coordination (group 0132) registration is still mandatory and requires the Core Module plus Specialist Module 4. Note that a commissioned model for support coordination is slated to begin 1 July 2028, with design consultation in the second half of 2026. Confirm the current position against health.gov.au and the NDIS Commission before you decide — this is the fastest-moving part of the plan.
Is the ~$80-$100 per hour figure my income?
No. That is the price LIMIT — the maximum you can bill against a participant's plan for Level 1 (~$80.06/hr) or Level 2 (~$100.14/hr) support coordination, as at the 2026-27 Pricing Arrangements and Price Limits. It is not a wage and should never be confused with SCHADS award rates paid to employed workers. Out of what you bill come tax, insurance, software, unbillable admin, and your own super. Confirm the current limits against the live PAPL.
How long do I have to submit a claim?
Historically providers had up to two years. From 1 December 2026 the claim window shortens to 90 days. Build the 90-day habit from day one so the change does not catch you with unpaid work. Verify the exact commencement and rules against the Federal Register of Legislation and NDIA guidance.
What is the single biggest compliance risk in my first 90 days?
Conflict of interest. Scrutiny is tightening now. If you have any financial interest in, or a reciprocal referral arrangement with, a service provider you recommend, you must disclose it in writing and preserve the participant's genuine choice. Read the NDIS Code of Conduct and keep your COI policy on file from Day 1.
Can I skip the templates and just start seeing participants?
You can, but it is the mistake that causes the most rework and risk. Without a signed service agreement, consent form, invoice, and case-note template ready before your first referral, you end up doing unbilled work, missing claim details, and creating compliance gaps. Phase 1 exists precisely so Phase 2 is fast.
