Frequently asked questions

Do support coordinators have to be registered with the NDIS Commission?

Not for standard support coordination (registration group 0106) — that mandatory registration requirement was paused in December 2025 with no new date. Specialist support coordination (group 0132) still requires registration, including a Core Module and Specialist Module 4 audit. Even unregistered, you remain bound by the NDIS Code of Conduct.

Does the NDIS Code of Conduct apply if I'm not registered?

Yes. The Code of Conduct applies to every person and organisation providing NDIS supports, registered or not, and it is enforceable against individuals. The Commission can issue banning orders against unregistered sole traders, so 'unregistered' does not mean exempt from regulation.

Can a support coordinator also deliver other supports to the same participant?

It is not outright banned, but it creates a conflict of interest you must identify, disclose in writing, and actively manage — including offering the participant genuine, documented alternatives. The NDIA is currently scrutinising invoicing where a caseload consistently flows to one connected provider, so disclosure alone is not enough.

When does the 90-day claim window start?

From 1 December 2026 the window to submit claims shortens from two years to 90 days. After that date, work not claimed within 90 days can no longer be claimed, so tight monthly invoicing becomes essential. Confirm the date against health.gov.au before relying on it.

What is commissioned support coordination?

From 1 July 2028 the open market for support coordination is planned to be replaced by a commissioned panel, meaning coordinators would work through a procured arrangement rather than being freely chosen. Design consultation runs in the second half of 2026, and the detail depends on the passage of the 2026 reform legislation.
