Frequently asked questions
How long does the NDIS Worker Orientation Module take?
It is designed to take roughly 90 minutes, but it is self-paced, so you can pause and return as many times as you need. Most people finish in one or two sittings. Treat the 90-minute figure as indicative and check the current module details on the NDIS Quality and Safeguards Commission's site.
Does the Worker Orientation Module expire or need renewing?
It does not work like a first aid certificate with a fixed expiry date. However, the Commission updates the content over time, and some employers like you to have completed a recent version. It is worth redoing it if it has been a few years or if your provider asks, since a fresh certificate shows current knowledge.
Is the Worker Orientation Module the same as a Certificate III?
No. The module is a free, short awareness course that gives you a completion certificate, not a nationally recognised qualification. A Certificate III in Individual Support is a paid, accredited course delivered by a registered training organisation. Many roles expect or prefer the Certificate III, so the free module complements it rather than replacing it — confirm course details on My Skills or training.gov.au.
Do I need the module before I can get a job?
Not necessarily — you can apply for and sometimes start roles without it, and you can complete it for free before you have a screening clearance. That said, many providers include it on their onboarding checklist, and having it done makes your application stronger. Doing it early removes a common barrier and shows initiative.
Is the Worker Orientation Module really free, or is there a hidden fee?
The NDIS Commission's own Worker Orientation Module is genuinely free, including the certificate — there is no fee to unlock your completion. Be cautious of third-party sites advertising a "free NDIS course" that then charge you to receive a certificate. Always start from the NDIS Quality and Safeguards Commission's official website.
Does completing the module mean I've passed my Worker Screening Check?
No, and it is important not to confuse the two. The module is training you complete online; the NDIS Worker Screening Check is a separate, paid government background check that produces a clearance recorded on a national database. You generally need both, and you should list them separately on your resume. Confirm screening requirements and fees with your state or territory Worker Screening Unit.
Will I get paid for doing free NDIS training?
Free modules you complete on your own initiative to improve your employability are usually unpaid. However, if your employer directs you to complete training as part of your job, that time may be payable under the SCHADS Award. Clarify this with your employer, and check your entitlements using the Fair Work Pay and Conditions Tool or the SCHADS Award (MA000100).
