Frequently asked questions
- Can I have both a plan manager and a support coordinator?
- Yes. They serve different functions and are funded from different budget lines. Most participants with moderate to high complexity benefit from having both.
- Do I need to be plan managed to have a support coordinator?
- No. You can be self-managed or agency managed and still have support coordination funding in your plan. Your coordination funding is in the Capacity Building budget regardless of how your other funds are managed.
- What if my plan does not include support coordination?
- Request it at your next plan review. Provide evidence from your treating team about why coordination is reasonable and necessary for your situation.
- Can my support coordinator also be my plan manager?
- No. The NDIA prohibits the same organisation from providing both support coordination and plan management to the same participant. This conflict of interest rule exists to protect you.
- Can I change from agency managed to plan managed without a plan review?
- Yes. You can request a change to your plan management type at any time by contacting the NDIA. It does not require a formal plan review.
- Are there limits on how many hours of support coordination I can use?
- Your support coordination funding is a dollar amount, not a set number of hours. The number of hours you can access depends on the hourly rate your coordinator charges against the NDIS price limit.
- What happens to my plan manager if my plan ends or is reviewed?
- Your plan manager continues until your new plan is in place and you have made a decision about ongoing management. There should be no gap in service between plan periods.
- Can I use an unregistered support coordinator?
- Yes, if you are plan managed or self-managed. Unregistered coordinators cannot be paid from an agency-managed plan.
