How do I even start moving out on the NDIS?
Start by naming it as a goal. Raise 'living more independently' with your support coordinator and at your next planning meeting or plan review. From there you can explore options, build any skills you need, and make a Home and Living request so the NDIA can consider supports like SIL or ILO.
How do I know if I'm ready to live out of home?
There's no fixed test or age. Readiness is about wanting more independence and having, or being able to build, the right support around you. Feeling nervous is normal and isn't a sign to wait — you can build skills and confidence step by step before and after you move.
Will I lose my family's support if I move out?
No. Moving out changes where you live, not who's in your life. Most people keep their family closely involved — visiting, calling and helping — while gaining more say over their own day. The aim is a home you're proud of with your informal supports still around you.
Can I try living out before I fully commit?
Often, yes. Many people do a trial stay — a weekend or a short period in a home — before signing on. It's the best way to test whether the place and its supports actually fit, and it's completely reasonable to choose a different option afterwards.
Do I need SDA to move out?
No. Specialist Disability Accommodation is only for a smaller group with an extreme functional impairment or very high support needs, and it requires strong evidence and an NDIA decision. Most people move into an ordinary rented home and bring their support with them.
