Frequently asked questions
What insurance do independent support workers need?
At a minimum, public liability and professional indemnity insurance. Many workers also take personal accident or income protection cover, since sole traders have no employer sick leave. Coordinators and self-managed participants will usually expect proof of cover before engaging you.
How much does support worker insurance cost?
It varies with your cover levels, the supports you provide and your claims history, and premiums change over time. Get two or three quotes from insurers that specialise in disability support work rather than relying on a fixed figure.
Do I need my own insurance if I only take a few clients?
Yes. Even occasional independent work exposes you to the same risks, and participants and coordinators will still expect proof of cover. The cost of a basic policy is small next to a single uninsured claim.
Does my insurance cover driving participants?
Only if the policy explicitly includes it — check before you transport participants in your own car, and make sure your car insurance also covers the use. Ask the insurer directly.
