How does NDIS home and living funding work?
It splits across budgets: your Core budget funds support workers (SIL and drop-in support), your Capital budget funds a specialist building (SDA) for those who qualify, and Capacity Building funds skill-building and exploring options. You pay everyday living costs like rent, food and bills yourself.
Does the NDIS pay my rent?
No. The NDIS doesn't pay rent, food or utilities — those are everyday costs everyone has. It funds disability supports and, for some people, a specialist building. If you live in SDA, you still pay a Reasonable Rent Contribution from your own income towards living there.
What's the difference between Core and Capital in home and living?
Core funds your ongoing support — SIL and drop-in workers who help day to day. Capital funds bigger specialist items, including SDA (a purpose-built or modified home) and home modifications. Support comes from Core; the specialist building comes from Capital.
Do I need SDA to get SIL?
No. SIL (support) and SDA (a specialist building) are separate. Many people receive SIL support in an ordinary rental, their own home or social housing, without any SDA. SDA is only for the small group with very high needs who meet its criteria.
