NDIS vs Insurance Schemes (iCare, TAC, Lifetime Support): Who Covers What?

If your disability came from an accident, a state insurance scheme like iCare, TAC or LSS may cover you instead of, or alongside, the NDIS.

If your disability was caused by a motor accident or workplace injury, you might be covered by a state insurance scheme — like iCare in NSW, the TAC in Victoria, or the Lifetime Support Scheme in South Australia — rather than, or as well as, the NDIS. This guide explains who covers what and how they interact.

Frequently asked questions

If iCare or the TAC covers me, can I also be on the NDIS?

Sometimes. The injury scheme funds supports it's responsible for (related to your accident), and the NDIS may fund disability supports that fall outside the scheme. There are agreements to avoid gaps and double-funding.

Which do I contact first after a motor accident injury?

Usually the relevant state scheme — the TAC in Victoria, the Lifetime Support Scheme in SA, or iCare's Lifetime Care in NSW. They cover accident-related care and treatment the NDIS does not.

Do injury schemes cover treatment the NDIS won't?

Often yes — schemes like the TAC and iCare can fund medical treatment and care related to the specific injury, which is outside the NDIS's disability-support role.
