At what age can I access aged care?
Most people can access government-funded aged care from 65. The threshold drops to 50 for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, and for people who are homeless or at risk of homelessness. Age lets you be assessed; the assessment decides what you qualify for.
Do my assets stop me qualifying?
No. Eligibility is based on your care needs and age, not your finances. Whether you have significant assets or very little, you can access government-funded aged care if you have assessed needs. Your finances only affect how much you contribute towards services.
Do I need to be an Australian citizen?
Government-funded aged care is generally for Australian citizens and permanent residents. You do not need to have been born here. If your residency status is unusual, My Aged Care can advise whether you qualify or point you to other supports.
