Frequently asked questions
Can I get SIL if I live alone?
Yes. SIL can be funded for someone living alone if that is what their assessed support needs call for. It is more commonly claimed in shared homes, because sharing a worker can meet high needs more efficiently, but individual SIL is possible. The NDIA decides based on your assessed needs, not on whether you have…
Can I change my SIL provider?
Yes, and usually without moving house. Your support and your housing are separate arrangements, so you can give notice under your service agreement and switch to a new SIL provider while staying in the same home. A support coordinator can help you change over smoothly.
Does SIL pay my rent?
No. SIL pays for the support workers who help you at home. Rent, groceries and everyday bills come from your own income — commonly the Disability Support Pension (DSP) and Commonwealth Rent Assistance (CRA). Our guide on NDIS housing costs, rent and contributions covers the money side in detail.
How is SIL different from SDA?
SIL is the support — the people helping you with daily life. SDA (Specialist Disability Accommodation) is the building — a specialist home with accessible features for people with very high needs. They are funded and assessed separately. Most people with SIL live in an ordinary home; only a smaller group also receive…
How much support do I need to qualify for SIL?
There is no single hours cut-off. SIL is generally for people who need a fairly high level of help, often through the day and night. If you only need support for part of the day, other Core supports may suit you better and be quicker to arrange. The NDIA assesses your individual needs and decides.
