Can people under 65 get a Home Care Package?
Home Care Packages were aged care, aimed at older Australians, and from 1 November 2025 they were replaced by Support at Home. If you're under 65 with a permanent and significant disability, your pathway is the NDIS, not aged care — so the NDIS is your main alternative.
What replaced Home Care Packages?
The Support at Home program replaced Home Care Packages and Short-Term Restorative Care on 1 November 2025, under a new Aged Care Act. It funds aged care in your own home through eight levels, with income- and asset-based contributions, and is accessed via My Aged Care.
Can I use the NDIS instead of a package provider?
If you're NDIS-eligible, yes — the NDIS is the pathway for under-65s with disability, not aged care. Under your plan you can use NDIS providers and independent support workers for help at home, choose several at once, and change them, without one provider holding a 'package'.
I'm on the NDIS and turning 65 — do I have to switch?
No. If you entered the NDIS before 65, you can choose to stay on it and keep using your current supports and workers. You may also move to aged care if you prefer, but turning 65 doesn't force the switch — the choice is yours.
