Frequently asked questions

Do unspent NDIS funds roll over to my next plan?

Generally no. When a plan ends or is reassessed, funding left in the old plan isn't usually carried across as a lump sum on top of the new one. Within a plan, though, you can keep using your funding right up until it ends, so it's best to use supports across the life of the plan.

What happens to money I don't use?

Unused funding in a plan doesn't typically transfer to your next plan. It's tied to the current plan period. That's why it helps to spread your supports across the plan rather than reaching the final weeks with a large unused balance you can't easily use in time.

Can I move unspent funds between budgets?

It depends on the budget. Core is the most flexible, so you can generally move funding between Core supports. Capacity Building is set aside for specific outcome areas and is less flexible, and Capital is tied to specific approved items. So a Core underspend gives you the most room to redirect.

Should I spend quickly so I don't lose the money?

No. Rushed spending often goes to waste, and every purchase must still be a legitimate, reasonable and necessary support connected to your plan. It's far better to use remaining funds intentionally on supports that help you reach your goals. If unsure whether something counts, check with your plan…

Does underspending affect my future funding?

It can. A pattern of large underspends may influence how future funding is set, since it can look like you needed less than was funded. Using your budget purposefully, and keeping evidence like therapy reports, helps show what you genuinely need at your next reassessment.

Who can help me use my remaining funds?

A plan manager can show your balances and spending, a support coordinator can help you find and book supports, and your LAC can talk through what fits your goals. If a persistent underspend suggests your plan doesn't match your life, see When your plan doesn't match your needs.
