Frequently asked questions
How are aged care star ratings calculated?
Each residential home gets an overall rating from 1 to 5 stars, built from four sub-categories: Residents' Experience, Compliance, Staffing, and Quality Measures. The data comes from resident surveys, regulatory records, care-minute staffing targets and clinical quality indicators.
What is a good aged care star rating?
Four or five stars overall is strong, but look at the sub-categories too. A high Residents' Experience and Staffing rating are especially reassuring. Check the detail behind any low Compliance score, and confirm your impression with a visit.
Do star ratings apply to home care providers?
No. Star ratings cover residential aged-care homes only. For care at home, you compare providers on the services they offer, their availability, cost and how well they match your needs, rather than on a star rating.
Should I choose a home on stars alone?
No. Star ratings are a strong starting point for a shortlist, but they cannot capture the warmth of staff, the food, the feel of the place or its location. Always follow up with a visit and your own questions before deciding.
