Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between Carer Payment and Carer Allowance?

Carer Payment is an income support payment, like a pension, for people who cannot work much because they give constant care. Carer Allowance is a smaller supplementary payment for providing daily care. They are separate, and you may be able to get both.

Can I get both Carer Payment and Carer Allowance?

Yes, if you meet the rules for each. They are assessed separately by Services Australia, so it is worth checking eligibility for both rather than assuming you can only receive one. Carer Payment has the more detailed means test of the two.

How many hours can I work on Carer Payment?

From March 2025, the limit became more flexible: you can work, study or volunteer up to 100 hours over a four-week period. This replaced the old 25 hours a week rule, giving carers more room to stay connected to work or study.

How do I claim these payments?

Claim through Services Australia, usually via your myGov account linked to Centrelink, or by phone. You will need medical information about the person you care for and details of income and assets. Rates change, so confirm current figures with Services Australia.
