Can I get the NDIS if I'm over 65?
Generally no. You must apply to join the NDIS before turning 65. If you acquire a disability after 65, your support comes through the aged-care system via My Aged Care instead, regardless of how significant the disability is.
What disability support is available over 65?
Support comes through aged care: the Commonwealth Home Support Programme for entry-level help, Support at Home for comprehensive care, a dedicated scheme for assistive technology and home modifications, and residential care if needed. It covers personal care, nursing, therapy, equipment and more.
What if I was already on the NDIS at 65?
If you joined the NDIS before turning 65, you generally get to choose whether to stay on the NDIS as you age or move to aged care. You are not forced off the scheme by your birthday. Consider the decision carefully, with support.
Is aged care means-tested like the NDIS?
Unlike the NDIS, aged care is partly means-tested. Clinical care at home is free, but you may contribute towards other supports based on your income and assets. Full pensioners pay little or nothing towards many services, and caps limit total contributions.
