Getting out more with the NDIS

How NDIS supports help you leave the house, overcome barriers and plan outings — including support workers for access — mainly through your Core budget.

If getting out of the house feels harder than it should, you are not alone, and there are supports built for exactly this. The NDIS can fund a support worker and other help to make outings possible — mainly through your Core budget. This guide looks at the real barriers that keep people in, the supports that help you get past them, and simple ways to plan outings so leaving the house feels less…

Frequently asked questions

Can the NDIS pay for a support worker to take me out?

Yes. Helping you get out and take part is exactly what a support worker is for, and it usually comes from your Core budget. The worker can help you plan, travel, and manage the outing so you can take part safely and confidently.

Does my plan pay for the outing itself?

No. The NDIS funds the support that helps you take part, not the cafe bill, entry fee or class cost, which are ordinary costs everyone has. Be clear with your worker about what is the disability support and what you will cover yourself.

What if I cannot use public transport?

Some plans include transport support to help with the cost of getting around when you cannot use public transport because of your disability, and a worker can travel with you. Travel training can also build your confidence to travel more independently.

How do I get more comfortable going out?

Start small and familiar, plan the practical bits ahead, and build up gradually. Skill-building supports like travel training can grow your independence over time, sometimes through your Capacity Building budget.

I do not have anyone to go with — can supports help?

Yes. A support worker can go with you, and joining a group can mean built-in company. Our guides on building friendships and connection and community groups and clubs show how to meet people while you are out.

How much support worker help can I use for outings?

That depends on your plan and goals. Some people use a worker for every outing; others just need help getting started. Talk to your planner or LAC about what fits your needs.
