Frequently asked questions

How recent does my evidence need to be?

There is no single fixed expiry date for NDIS evidence. What counts as current depends on your condition - a stable, permanent condition may need less frequent updates than a changing one. Ask the NDIA or your support coordinator what recency they expect before you submit.

Do I need every document on the checklist?

No. Collect what is relevant to your disability and your goals. Someone requesting assistive technology will need quotes and an AT assessment; someone else may not. Use the checklist to spot gaps, not to gather documents you do not need.

Who should write my letters and reports?

Evidence carries more weight when it comes from a professional qualified to assess your condition - for example a specialist, GP, or allied health professional such as an occupational therapist. Letters from family or friends can support functional impact evidence but usually cannot replace professional reports.

What if I cannot afford new assessments?

Talk to the NDIA, a free independent disability advocate, or your support coordinator before paying for anything. Some existing reports may still be usable, and there may be lower-cost options. Never assume you must fund a new assessment yourself without checking.

Can a provider tell me exactly what to write to get more funding?

Be cautious. Under the NDIS Code of Conduct, providers must act with integrity and manage conflicts of interest. Genuine evidence describes your real situation. If a provider pressures you to overstate needs, that is a red flag - you can raise concerns with the NDIS Commission on 1800 035 544.
