Does my child automatically need a nominee at 18?
No. Adults are presumed to make their own decisions, often with support. A nominee is a considered step for people who genuinely need someone to act for them — not an automatic consequence of turning 18. Supported decision-making comes first.
What changes about decision-making when a young person turns 18?
The young person becomes, by default, the person whose choices count about their supports. Families can still be closely involved, but the aim is for the young person to have as much say as possible, in whatever way works for them.
Can the NDIS help with getting a job?
It can fund supports that help a young person prepare for and take part in work — building skills, confidence and practical help to start — alongside mainstream employment services. Raise it at the reassessment around this age.
Will my child's plan change at 18?
