What is Carer Gateway?
Carer Gateway is a free Australian Government service supporting unpaid carers — people who care for a family member or friend without being paid. It offers counselling, coaching, online skills courses, peer support, emergency respite and tailored support packages, all in one place. You can reach it…
Who can use Carer Gateway?
Anyone who provides unpaid care to someone who is frail due to age, living with disability, managing a chronic medical condition, or living with mental illness. You do not need a formal title or a payment to qualify. Many people who would benefit do not think of themselves as carers.
What services does Carer Gateway provide?
Free counselling in person or by phone, professional coaching, online skills courses, peer support groups and forums, emergency respite if you suddenly cannot provide care, and tailored support packages matched to your situation. The services focus on supporting the carer's own wellbeing and needs.
How do I access Carer Gateway?
Call 1800 422 737, Monday to Friday 8am to 5pm, or visit carergateway.gov.au. Emergency respite can be arranged by phone at any time. You do not need a referral and there is no cost — just be honest about how you are coping so they can match the right support.
