How does a support coordinator help with housing?
They help you move from a housing goal to a real home — coordinating OT and specialist assessments, explaining your SDA, SIL and ILO options, searching for suitable vacancies, liaising with providers, and supporting your move. They're the practical engine behind an NDIS housing journey.
Can a support coordinator get me housing funding?
They can help you gather and present strong evidence for a plan review, but they can't approve funding — only the NDIA decides. Their role is to make your case clear and coordinate the supports around it, not to make the decision.
Does a support coordinator provide my housing?
Usually not. Support coordinators coordinate services rather than provide housing or daily support. If the same organisation does both, ask how they manage the conflict of interest so your choice and control are protected.
How do I get the most from a support coordinator?
Be clear about your housing goal, share information openly, stay involved in decisions, and ask them to keep you updated and put key things in writing. If they're not progressing your housing, you can raise it or change coordinators.
What if my support coordinator isn't helping with housing?
Raise your concerns with them directly and their organisation. You have the right to change support coordinators if the relationship isn't working, and an independent coordinator with no stake in your provider choices can be a good option.
Is support coordination for housing free?
It is funded by the NDIS from your Capacity Building budget, so you do not pay out of pocket, but it does need to be in your plan. Ask for it at your planning meeting and link it clearly to your housing goal.
How long does a support coordinator take to find housing?
There is no fixed timeframe. SDA and SIL journeys often take months because they depend on assessments, funding and real vacancies. A good coordinator sets realistic expectations and keeps things moving with a clear, written action plan.
Can I change support coordinators during a housing search?
Yes. If your coordinator is not progressing your housing or you do not feel heard, you can move to another provider without losing the funding, which stays in your plan. Ask the new coordinator to pick up the existing action plan so momentum is not lost.
