Request to change how your plan is managed

Ask the NDIA to change your plan management — agency-managed, plan-managed or self-managed.

Who it's for

This template is for participants, or their nominee, who want to change how their NDIS plan is managed. Maybe your funding is agency-managed now and you want more choice of providers, or you feel ready to self-manage, or you would like a plan manager to handle the invoices for you.

It suits anyone weighing up the three options, agency-managed, plan-managed and self-managed, or a mix across different supports. If the way your plan is managed no longer suits your life, this letter is how you ask the NDIA to update it.

Why write it

How your plan is managed affects which providers you can use and how much of the paperwork you handle. Agency-managed means the NDIA pays providers directly. Plan-managed means a plan manager pays them for you. Self-managed means you manage the funding and pay providers yourself.

A clear written request tells the NDIA exactly what you want and why, which helps them action it correctly. Worth knowing: a plan manager is funded on top of your other supports and does not reduce those budgets. Putting your request in writing also gives you a record of what you asked for and when.

How to write it

State plainly what you are asking for: which management type you want, and which supports it should apply to. You can request one type for everything, or a mix, for example plan-managed for therapies and self-managed for consumables.

Give a brief reason, such as wanting more choice of providers, less paperwork, or greater control over your budget. You do not need a long justification; a sentence or two is usually enough.

Include your name, NDIS number and contact details, and if you are asking for plan management, you can note that it is funded on top of your supports. Sign and date the letter, then send it to the NDIA and keep a copy for your records.

Why:
[Explain briefly — e.g. more choice and flexibility over who I use, or help managing invoices and budgets.]

[If moving to plan-managed: My preferred plan manager is [name], if that can be arranged.]

Please update my plan, or let me know the next step and anything else you need from me.

About this template

What are the plan management options?
There are three. Agency-managed means the NDIA pays your providers directly and you use registered providers. Plan-managed means a plan manager pays providers and tracks your budget for you. Self-managed means you manage the funding and pay providers yourself. You can also mix these across different supports in your plan to suit how you like to work.
Does a plan manager cost me part of my budget?
No. Plan management is funded on top of your other supports and does not reduce your other budgets. When it is included, the NDIA adds funding specifically to pay the plan manager, so choosing a plan manager should not take money away from your therapy, core or capacity-building supports.
How do I change how my plan is managed?
Put your request in writing to the NDIA, stating which management type you want and which supports it applies to, with a brief reason. Include your name, NDIS number and contact details. You can raise it at a plan review or contact the NDIA between reviews. Keep a copy of your request for your records.
Can I have a mix of management types?
Yes. Many participants use more than one type across their plan, for example plan-managed for therapies and self-managed for consumables. In your request, simply name which supports you want managed which way. A mix lets you keep control where you want it while handing over paperwork where that is easier.
How long does the change take?
Timeframes vary, and a change may be actioned during a plan review or as a plan variation between reviews. It is best to send your request as early as possible and follow up if you do not hear back. Contact the NDIA to confirm progress, and keep using your current arrangement until the change is confirmed.
