Register with My Aged Care on 1800 200 422 or online and arrange an assessment. If the assessor finds the person can no longer be safely supported at home, they receive an approval for residential aged care, which is what unlocks a place.
When should I do the means assessment?
Arrange the means assessment with Services Australia early, often well before the move (commonly up to 120 days before entry). It works out contributions toward care and accommodation, so doing it early means you know your likely costs before choosing a home.
What costs are involved in residential care?
Usually a basic daily fee set as a percentage of the Age Pension, an accommodation payment (a lump-sum RAD, a daily DAP or a mix, unless the government covers it), and means-tested care contributions based on income and assets.
